DID YOU
THINK I WOULD LEAVE YOU CRYING?
(Moira Miller)
Summary
It was like thinking you were safe... in a castle drawbridge.
Then somebody came along and knocked them all down and there you were, in the
middle, without even a suit of armour.
The cold reality of war is something Lorna has never
experienced until her friend Phil goes off to the Falkland Islands. She and her
grandfather wait for Phill to return – she thinking of him in the cold and mud
of the South Atlantic and her grandfather thinking of his time in combat during
the Sekond World War. Both of them are changed by the experience.
In another story, Quintus Maximus, a
Roman Centurion of the XXth Legion, is fighting in Caledonia. His letters to
his family at home tell of endless hours of sentry duty, of constant wind and
rain and of an act of incredible courage by his enemy.
This collection of sensitive and
moving stories traces the effects of conflict and compassion across the years;
the friendship; the heroism and the cruetly or war.
